What is an Inequality?

An inequality implies that two sides are not strictly equal, but instead one is greater than, less than, or bounded to the other. Common signs are > (greater than), < (less than), (greater than or equal to), and .

Crucial Rule: Flipping the sign

When solving an inequality, the steps are nearly identical to solving a linear equation. The major exception is: if you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, you MUST flip the inequality sign.

For example, if you have -2x > 4, when dividing by -2, the result becomes x < -2.
